The 22,000-seater BBVA Compass Stadium- The Dynamo in Houston will host Guyana’s originally scheduled home game of the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers against Mexico on October 12, the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) confirmed yesterday via its web site.
The match was originally billed as Guyana’s last home game in this round of the Qualifiers at the National Stadium, Providence. The switch means that the Golden Jaguars’ final two games will be played away from home, as they are set to take on hosts Costa Rica in San Jose on October 16.
While reasons for the change in venue have not been forthcoming from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), this latest development is certainly a major disappointment for local fans, as many were hoping to see the likes of Premier League striker Javier Hernandez and others in action on local soil.
This publication had learnt from its sources that the change in venue was as a result of the economic benefits that could be derived if the match is held in the US. Yesterday local officials were tight-lipped on the issue, but this publication learnt that a press conference will be held soon and the GFF top brass is expected to update local media operatives on what transpired during the meeting last Saturday in the USA.
